This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like typical physical horror, but inside Together exists a profound meditation about how we choose to love each other.

A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when the couple move from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a slow burn fright fest, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that arise in any relationship after ten years. At their core, they still love each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
